I hope you already know how to install the latest version of WordPress! Now after you have installed it, I’m sure you want to learn how to switch away from the default blue WordPress theme to a new one. Well there are thousands of wordpress theme out there for you, which is free for you to download and use it on your site. Some of the places where you can look for wordpress themes are: Official Wordpress Theme Site, WordPress Theme dot com, Siteground Wordpress Themes, Free Wordpress Themes & Romow Wordpress Themes.
But once you download the theme file (.zip), how are you going to install in your wordpress blog? You don’t know? Well don’t worry I have a put up a easy tutorial for you below with lots of screenshots. If you follow the steps properly I’m sure you will be able to install your new theme in no time!
This tutorial assumes that you already have WordPress installed on your host. It also assumes you are installing a “normal” theme, i.e. no advanced functionality that would require additional wordpress plugins or configuration.
Step 1: Download your wordpress theme (usually comes in .zip/.rar format)
Obviously the first step would be to download the theme of your choice. You can use the sources that I specified above and look for a theme that suits your taste & purpose. You can download multiple themes and install them all on your wordpress and try them one by one to get the look and feel. For this tutorial I have chosen the Blue Green theme created by Themelab. Click the download link, and save the .zip file to your hard drive.
Extract the /blue-green/ folder only. All you have to do with Readme.txt is read it (which is why it’s called a readme file) and isn’t needed for the next step - uploading the theme to WordPress.
Step 2: Upload the theme directory to WordPress (via FTP)
Next step is to upload your theme in your hosting account (where your blog is located). The fastest and the most easiest way is to use an FTP client such as FileZilla to connect to your hosting account. Navigate to where WordPress is installed and locate the /wp-content/themes/ directory. Upload the /blue-green/ directory (the directory which contains the extracted files) in there. After you’re done, it should look something like this.
The hard part is now out of the way. The next and final step is to activate the theme within your WordPress control panel.
Step 3: Activate the theme within your WordPress Dashboard
Login to your WordPress admin panel, and navigate to the Presentation tab. You should now be at a screen that looks like this.
If everything is done properly you should be able to see the Blue Green screenshot in your WP Prsentation Panel. WordPress reads the directory and searches for the screenshot image and stylesheet within it. Simply click on it, and your theme is activated.
So installing a wodpress theme wasn’t that hard, was it? WordPress really makes everything simple just like that. If you still need help, feel free to shoot me an email at - blogger[at]seocompany.ca.
